Why Secondary Glazing for Listed Buildings?
Listed buildings present unique challenges when it comes to improving thermal and acoustic performance. Conservation officers rightly protect the historic fabric of these important buildings, which often means that replacement double glazing is not permitted.
Secondary glazing offers the ideal solution. Because it's fitted to the inside of the window reveal and doesn't alter the external appearance of the building, it's generally accepted by conservation officers. Crucially, it's also fully reversible — if required, the secondary glazing can be removed without any damage to the original windows or frames.
We have over 25 years of experience working with listed buildings across London. We understand the sensitivities involved and can provide documentation to support your Listed Building Consent application where required.
Solutions for All Listing Grades
Buildings of exceptional interest. Only 2.5% of listed buildings fall into this category. Secondary glazing is often the only approved method of improving thermal and acoustic performance.
Requirements: Requires Listed Building Consent for any alterations. Secondary glazing is typically approved as it is reversible and preserves original fabric.
Particularly important buildings of more than special interest. Around 5.8% of listed buildings are Grade II*.
Requirements: Same consent requirements as Grade I. Our solutions are designed to meet the strictest heritage standards.
Buildings of special interest. The majority of listed buildings (91.7%) fall into this category.
Requirements: While requirements may be slightly less stringent, conservation officers still require sympathetic solutions. Secondary glazing is the preferred approach.
Conservation Area Properties
Even if your property isn't individually listed, it may be within a conservation area. London has over 1,000 conservation areas, covering areas from Hampstead to Greenwich, Belgravia to Islington.
In conservation areas, there's an emphasis on preserving the character and appearance of the area. While not all window changes require permission, replacement of original windows with modern alternatives is often restricted.
Secondary glazing provides the performance improvements you need without triggering these restrictions. As an internal installation, it doesn't change the external appearance of your property.
